We, Ed and Matt, met at college and both have a degree in 3D industrial design. Professional careers and a diverse range of businesses later we have got back together.
We are designers and makers at heart. The craft detailing every part of our cabins is why we started Cabinmakers and only offer a bespoke design and cabin making service.
Our cabins are made at our workshop in Backwell, North Somerset and we source materials and specialist contractors locally to support our community of businesses and soletraders in our area.
Ed is a master of the reuse and up-cycling of materials. His early career was spent making lamps, clocks, and homewares from found objects. His making skills and ingenuity expanded when he started a business that designed and made the exhibits for the Bristol Exploratory(now We The Curious), and again while working for various design and build businesses on the Bristol area.
Ed is also a deeply experienced project and site manager. Prior to starting Cabinmakers with Matt, Ed ran a local business with a friend that repaired all of the stonework and ironworks around the Bristol and a North Somerset area. You’ve possibly walked over many of the bridges he helped refurbish.
Matt has had a 30+ year professional career as an 3D designer. For much of his career he worked internationally helping global brands, designing and making there retail interiors and furniture.
This led Matt to start his own retail design business in 2010, Double Retail. A business that achieved B Corp Certification. Matt retired from Double Retail in 2020 to take some time out.
The experience of B Corp Certification is the basis of how Cabinmakers is run – to the same ethical standards.
Matt is the lead designer for Cabinmakers and he brings his professional design process and experience to every cabin making project.
